Following his escape, Mason joins a "Black Ops" team featuring comrades Frank Woods and Joseph Bowman. Their missions take them to diverse locations including Vietnam , Hong Kong , and the Soviet Union to hunt down Dragovich and stop the Nova 6 threat.

While in prison, Mason befriends Viktor Reznov , a former Soviet soldier. Together, they lead a massive prisoner uprising. Mason’s journey starts with a failed attempt to assassinate Fidel Castro in Cuba. Captured by Cuban forces, he is handed over to Soviet General Nikita Dragovich and imprisoned in the Vorkuta gulag. Following his escape, Mason joins a "Black Ops"
